Redfern Gym / Tony Mundine

The Tony Mundine Elouera Gym was opened in Redfern in 1984, in one of Australia’s most troubled and notorious inner city areas, known as "The Block". The gym was opened to help keep the local kids off the streets and provide a sense of community and positivity to the local residents.

It was one of the last remaining old school style gyms in Australia and has trained several world champions and impacted countless lives. It officially closed down in late 2016 and was knocked down in 2019.

Tony Mundine is an Australian former boxer, and one of the country's most accomplished indigenous fighters. The only Australian boxer to compete professionally in four weight divisions, he held the Australian middleweight, light heavyweight, cruiserweight and heavyweight titles, as well as the Commonwealth middleweight and light heavyweight titles. He is the father of former world champion boxer Anthony Mundine and was the 2005 Inductee for the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame Moderns category.
